Shop and Office Block in an Arcaded Street & Warehouse Block in Arcaded Street

Charles Rennie Mackintosh, 1915

Two previously undocumented architectural drawings probably relate to current town planning surveys in India organised by Mackintosh's friend town planner Patrick Geddes. The symmetrical designs use a simplified classical vocabulary, and ornament is minimal, although the forms of the tapered columns in the Office Block and the detailing of the three carved figurative panels in the Warehouse Block acknowledge their probable Indian context. The designs show Mackintosh working for the first time on the scale of the urban streetscape, and probably for an overseas location.
