The photographic diptych show the iconic Selfridges building in Birmingham and the church referred to in the title is St MartinÂ’s church, a neighbouring building within the Bull Ring complex. The work specific relevance to Birmingham and the Midlands yet it is not a documentary image. The artist adopts a much more abstract approach, choosing to focus on architectural detail. This is characteristic of his practice in that his subject is always modern architecture. The scale and finish of these works is vital to the viewerÂ’s experience. The photographs are very large and their surface is highly reflective, attracting reflections from the surrounding environment to become part of a unique experience of viewing. Birmingham and Walsall art galleries are working together to build up a collection exploring the metropolis and urban environment under the Art Fund International scheme. Presented by the Art Fund through Art Fund International.
