Set of stools

Unknown artist, c. 1620

A set of six oak joined stools with splayed legs decorated by turning and carved frieze rails. A set of joined stools and a draw-leaf table were typical furnishings of middle rank homes in the early seventeenth century. They were frequently kept in the hall, which functioned as the main living space for the household and were common despite their exceptional rarity today.
