Edward Bawden, 1935

© Estate of Edward Bawden

This work depicts the harbour at Newhaven in East Sussex, with three large ships in dock. Despite its industrial subject matter, the Sussex Downs run along the background suggesting a meeting of the rural and functional that is a feature of much of the south coast. Although Bawden spent almost all his time in Essex, he did make occasional visits to Newhaven with Eric Ravilious. The Towner holds the broadest collection of Ravilious' work in the world but only a handful of works by his close friend and colleague Edward Bawden. This work is therefore a welcome addition as it was painted during a joint visit by the artists to Sussex.
