Seated Shepherd with Cows and Sheep in a Landscape

Aelbert Cuyp, c. 1644

This is a good example of an early pastoral landscape by Cuyp. The artist's works were much admired in 18th century England and formed an important element in many country house collections. In this work he has discarded the more obvious signs of his debt to Jan van Goyen and has fully developed the poetic effects which gave his art its distinctive appeal.
