Sculpture of a griffon's head
Unknown artist, 640 BC

Such griffons' heads would have decorated the shoulders of giant cauldrons dedicated at early Greek temples. They also mark the beginning of the hollow-cast bronze technique in Europe. Towards the middle of the 7th century B.C. the Greeks achieved a remarkable perfection of form as this came to be conceived entirely in terms of the new method.
