Rebecca

Sir Jacob Epstein, c. 1930

© Tate, London 2006

In 1930 Epstein modelled the portraits of two sisters, Rebecca and Esther, who were half negro and half Jewish and worked in nightclubs. Rebecca, with her pigtails and her plaintive expression seems a more introspective character than the sultry and provocative Esther.
