This work was painted during Hambling's time as the first Artist in Residence at the National Gallery (1979-1981), while she was preparing a series of similar paintings. This work is part of a collection of late 20th-century British paintings donated through the Art Fund to four galleries. All eight paintings take as their subject the human figure.
