Portrait study of W Somerset Maugham
Graham Sutherland, 1949

A head and shoulders portrait of W Somerset Maugham (1874-965). Sutherland was commissioned to paint Somerset Maugham's portrait in 1949 and this seems to be one of the sketches from life. He worked up the sketches into more elaborate drawings now in the Fitzwilliam and the final painting hangs in the Tate.
