Portrait of William Ffolkes & Portrait of an unknown lady
William Hoare, 1740–1770

The two portraits are not a pair, but from their similarity of treatment, use of the same medium, and uniformity of size and style of frame, they form appropriate pendants to each other. The male portrait is of William Ffolkes of Hillingdon Hall in Norfolk, while the other is of an unknown sitter. William Hoare spent nine years in Rome where he came into contact with the celebrated portrait painter Pompeo Batoni. On his return he established himself in Bath as a portraitist, mainly using pastels.
