Portrait of Viscount Melville

This is a study for a full length portrait in the National Bank of Scotland. The sitter is Henry Dundas (1742-1811) who was Home Secretary in 1791; Secretary for War, 1794-1801; First Lord of the Admiralty, 1804-5 and then created Viscount Melville in 1802. He is depicted in scarlet robes, trimmed with white fur and gold lace, black under-robe, white wig and cravat. The painting was presented by C. Morland Agnew, as a Centenary gift to the National Gallery and later transferred to Tate.
