Portrait of Thomas Carlyle on his Eighty-Fourth Birthday

Carlyle, lying on a sofa in the drawing-room of his home in Cheyne Row. Signed, and inscribed by the artist on the back of the frame: 'Carlyle as we found him when we called at Cheyne Row on his 84th birthday. H.A.' Carlyle told Allingham's husband: 'Your wife is the only person who has made a successful portrait of me, though many have tried'.
