Portrait of the Rt. Rev. Beilby Porteous, Bishop of London
John Hoppner, c. 1807

Bishop Porteus was a notable preacher, supporter of the Anti-Slavery movement and resident at Fulham Palace from 1787 to his death in 1809. While living at the palace Porteus began collecting portraits of his predecessors. He left the proceeds of the sales of his sermons to make a library at Fulham Palace to house his collection of books and portraits, now known as the Porteus Library.
