Portrait of Sir Nicholas Goodison

Tom Phillips, 1991–2005

© Tom Phillips

This portrait of Sir Nicholas Goodison, former Chairman of both the Art Fund (1986-2002) and the Courtauld Institute of Art (1982-2002), originated in 1991 as a study from life. It was initially produced in preparation for a portrait commissioned by the London Stock Exchange, of which Sir Nicholas was Chairman from 1976-1986. The mosaicising approach creates a dynamic tension between the formality and classical associations of the technique and the lively individuality of the portrait which is set in a distinctive decorative border.
