Portrait of Miss Elizabeth Hemyng

Anthony Devis, 1738–1742

This portrait is of a slightly forbidding spinster wearing a fashionable, Spitalfields silk open robe of yellow and white, which can be dated 1738-42. She seems to be holding a container of perfume. The room in which she sits is furnished in the middle-class manner of the time - austerely but elegantly.
