Mary Ellen (1821-1861) married George Meredith in 1849 but their marriage was troubled. The couple met Wallis in the early 1850s and posed for several of his works. In 1857 Mary Ellen left her husband for Wallis and they had a son together. She died soon after that and Wallis brought up their son by himself.
