Portrait of Lilian Bomberg
David Bomberg, 1890-1957

Bomberg was considered one of the most important painters of his generation at the Slade. His influence can be seen in the work of Leon Kossoff and Frank Auerbach, who both attended his evening classes at Borough Polytechnic. Between 1929 and 1938 Bomberg painted a series of intimate and powerful portraits of his wife Lilian, which are notable for their use of vigorous brushstrokes. This painting will form a key component in the galleryÂ’s major exhibition of his work next year.
