Portrait of Lettice Mary Banks

William Hoare, late 1740s

Half-length portrait of Lettice Mary Banks (1716 - 1757), the aunt of Sir Joseph Banks, the botanist. When Hoare arrived in Bath in 1738, there was little competition but great demand for portraits which continued after Gainsborough's arrival in 1759.
