Half-length portrait of John Penwarne (1721-88). John Penwarne inherited the ancient but diminished estate of Penwarne in Mawnan, Cornwall. He was a friend and benefactor of the artist. The portrait was originally dated circa 1786 which was the year in which Penwarne was sold and the family moved to London. Stylistically it looks much earlier and resembles portraits by Opie dating from 1780-8I.
