Portrait of Daniel Lambert
I Harston, 1808
Daniel Lambert was nationally famous for being the largest man in England at the time of his death in 1809. He travelled the country exhibiting himself for a fee, and it was whilst attending the races at Stamford in 1809 that he died. His clothes and hat, which are the same as the ones in this painting, have been retained by the town ever since and are on display at the museum. This is a characteristic piece of folk art from the early nineteenth century.
