Portrait of Capt John Clayton Cowell, 1st (or the Royal) Regiment of Foot

John Clayton Cowell (1762-1819) was appointed Second Colonel of the 2nd Bn The Royal Scots in 1800. Fort Cowell in the West Indies was named after him when captured by him from the Danes in 1801. He later became ADC to the Duke of Kent (Queen Victoria's father). In this portrait he wears the full-dress uniform of The Royal Scots of about 1796. An interesting feature of the painting is the hairy goat-skin valise worn by the orderly who walks away through an opening on the left. This piece of equipment went out of use in 1800. The orderly is also in the uniform of The Royal Scots.
