Portrait of a Man
François-Xavier Fabre, 1809

Nothing is known of the identity of the sitter but he can probably be assumed to be French, especially as a partly legible inscription on the stretcher begins M.Camille.... Fabre depicts his subject with extreme sensitivity, using subtle modelling for his face and costume and distinctive highlighting to capture the wildness of his curls.
