Portrait of a Lady wearing a Green Dress
Richard Gibson, 1615–1690

Portrait of Frances Jennings, Duchess of Tyrconnell. This was one of the most attractive and accomplished of the seventeenth century miniatures in the Buccleuch collection. The attribution of the miniature to Richard Gibson was based on its resemblance to several signed examples in private collections, but whoever may have painted it, it is a lovely work and displays the degree of refinement to which the contemporaries of Cooper were able to carry their work without loss of boldness and simplicity.
