Porringer

Katherine Mangie, c. 1695

The making of high quality church, civic and domestic silver was a small but important industry in Hull from the late 1400s to late 1700s. Of the small number of pieces made, even fewer have survived and this work is a rare example. Katherine Mangie was married to silversmith Edward Mangie and Wilbeforce House collection has a porringer made by her husband ArtFunded in 1950. Katherine took over her husband's business after his death although it was very rare for women to own businesses in the 1600s.
