Pont Aven Landscape
Sir Matthew Smith, c. 1921

This bequest of eight paintings from the collection of Mrs Sarah McLeod through the Art Fund in 2001 complements and extends the Harris Museum and Art Gallery's 20th-century collection. The purples, blues and acid greens of Matthew Smith's brooding, expressionist Pont-Aven Landscape are more usually associated with his Cornish paintings of 1920. In contrast, the explosion of impulsive brushstrokes and hot, saturated reds, to be found in Roses in a Vase, show him at his most characteristic.
