Pair of vases

, c. 1830

These monumental vases are made of papier-mache, inlaid with mother-of-pearl and mounted in ormolu. They imitate porcelain and lacquer and their elegant shapes derive from Kangxi porcelain. These vases show the revival of the taste for mounting both porcelain and lacquer in rich gilt bronze mounts.
