Pair of six-fold screens: Flowers of the Four Seasons
Matanabe Shiko, 1700–1755
Brill colours on backgrounds of gold-leaf squares. School of Korin, Shiko his most gifted pupil. Two characteristic techniques employed here: moriage (heaping) of the chrysanthemums, where powdered chalk is built up to give an effect of relief; and the dripping of paint on to wet paint of a different colour (tarashikomi) for stalks and leaves.
