Pair of portraits of Thomas & Catherine Havers
Barthélémy du Pan, 1735
A pair of three-quarter length portraits of Thomas Havers and his wife Catherine, the daughter of John Dutty. Mrs Havers, in a siIvery-grey dress holds a mask in her left hand (main illustration). An architectucil background with three figures and a red curtain to her left. Mr Havers in a grey suit also holds a mask in his right hand with a red curtain behind and a column to the left. The background in the portrait of Mrs Havers is reminiscent of Longhi while his treatment of the costume reflects current rococo impulses. The pictures are in their original 18th century carved and gilt frames. This work was attributed to Andrea Soldi when purchased by Temple Newsam in the 1960s.
