Ovoid Coffee Urn

Maker Unknown, 1775

This eye-catching coffee urn is one of the most unusual survivals of Scottish domestic silverware. Only 15 examples of the type are known, and most have lost the burner, which is retained in this case. The maker is unknown, but there are traces of an Edinburgh hallmark. The Museum of Edinburgh holds a nationally significant collection of silverware made in the city, including other items relating to the history of tea and coffee drinking.
