This is one of three known views of the Abbey by the artist. Reading Abbey is known as the place where the trial of Hugh Faringdon, the last abbot, took place during the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII. Later it was the first home of the Abbey School that briefly had Jane Austin as a pupil in 1784.
