Music of the Spheres, Series 1

Halima Cassell, 2011

This set of three carved spheres introduces a new phase in Cassell’s work in clay, moving from functional works such as pots to the purely sculptural. Cassell’s work entails a constant pushing at materials’ limitations, and this series is no different. Although they are hollow, the spheres are carved out of brick clay in places six or seven inches thick – far thicker than is normally considered possible. The title refers to the notion of separate celestial bodies existing in a form of harmon,y and order and the relationships between the three spheres is central to the work. The sculptures will add to Leeds collection of leading studio ceramic artists and enable them to explore the interaction between sculpture and contemporary craft.
