Ming dynasty table

Square table with mitred mortice and tenon frame. Eight immortals were supposed to be able to sit at this type of table. Huang huali wood was much sought after for its beautiful grain and subtle colour, ranging from pale yellow to a purplish red. The sophisticated design and construction associated with cabinetmakers of the late Ming period is evident in this table, No nails or screws were used. A mitred mortise and tenon frame with a central floating panel is supported by recessed legs joined by a humpbacked stretcher and apron. The table would have been used for writing, dining, or studying and placed against the wall when not in use.
