Medieval gold and sapphire finger ring

Unknown, 1200

This handsome medieval finger ring was found by a metal detectorist in Willingale, near Bishop’s Stortford. It is thought to have been made in the 13th or 14th century. The gold, D-shaped ring is finely engraved with an unusual pattern and the hexagonal faceted bezel is set with an irregular dark-blue sapphire. Epping Forest District Museum holds archaeological material relating to the area and the ring now joins the collection.
