Mazeppa Pursued by Wolves & Mazeppa surrounded by horses
John Frederick I Herring, 1833
Two horse paintings with Byron's 'Mazeppa'. One scene depicts Mazeppa (Polish noble) tied tohorse's back being pursued through woods by wolves. Other scene depicts horse, still carrying Mazeppa, falling dead from exhaustion among herd of wild horses. These works are copies of 2 paintings by Vernet (1826), probably made from the mezzotint engravings by JGS Lucas (published 1831).
