Sir Thomas Lawrence, 1789

Portrait of Mary Hamilton, the wife of Lawrence's artist friend and neighbour William Hamilton. Lawrence's biographer recorded that the two friends 'used to draw a great deal from the antique statues at night, whilst Mrs Hamilton would read to them either poetry, history or works of the imagination'.
