Man and Woman

Sir Roland Penrose, 1949

© Roland Penrose Estate

Seated male and female figures composed of geometric shapes. The artist became closely involved with the Surrealist group in Paris, and later established the British Surrealist Group. He was a regular visitor to the Falmouth area: the ship's figurehead which features in a number of his major works was purchased in the High Street, and during the summer of 1937 he played host to Max Ernst, Man Ray and others in his brother's house in the town.
