Maiolica dish

Patanazzi Workshop, Urbino, c. 1585

A large dish from a spectacular maiolica service made to commemorate the marriage of Alfonso II d'Este, Duke of Ferrara in 1579. The centre of the dish features a painting of a boar hunt after an engraving by Johannes Stradanus which itself was based on a painting by Marten de Vos. A maiolica service was less expensive than silver but still prestigious, and was intended more for display than regular use.
