Maiolica dish

Unknown artist, 1703

This dish, one of the key pieces for the study of the pictorial style in maiolica, is of exceptional beauty and rarity. The evolution of this pictorial style is well-understood from the 1520s onwards. It is less clear where the style originated and this dish, with its remarkably early date, stands at the very beginning of its development.
