Madonna and Child in a Landscape
David Jones, c. 1920–1921

© Trustees of the David Jones Estate
Madonna clutching the Christchild in a landscape setting reflecting the South Downs. The Madonna portrays an energy, almost an anxiety, of an early tussle between tradition and modernity, between faith and fact. Jones lived in Ditchling in the craft community founded by Eric Gill.
