Linear Motif in Black & White
Victor Pasmore, c. 1959–1960

This work was produced during the period that Pasmore was Head of Fine Art at Newcastle University, where he set up the influential Art Foundation course, establishing Newcastle as a significant centre of art development in Britain. The work is part of the important period in Pasmore's career from 1952 to 1966/7 when he was producing relief works and was constructed from ready-made boards assembled together and painted. The somewhat rough construction shows that this is one of Pasmore's self-assembled reliefs. This relief reflects PasmoreÂ’s continuing interest in light and space, previously explored in collage and figurative river scenes.
