Claude Lorraine, 1664

© National Gallery, London

This painting is no. 162 in Claude's 'Liber Veritatis', the artist's own pictorial record of his work, now in the British Museum. Depicts Psyche's grief at the departure of Cupid. A lonely figure in a deserted landscape, a mood of dreamy enchantment and Arcadian tranquillity such as appealed to the Romantics.
