JYMI

Frank Auerbach, 1981

© The Artist courtesy of Marlborough Fine Art

Thick impasto portrait head and shoulders. Auerbach was born in Berlin, but lives and works in London. He is known for his violently expressionist style in which the figures 'seem burdened with some terrible experience', as if they were 'refugees conscious of concentration camps' as Stephen Spender noted.
