John Dalrymple (1619-1695) was Joint Secretary of State in 1691 with the 1st Earl of Melville. He was the eldest brother of Sir David Dalrymple. The portrait was porbably set in situ in the dining room at Newhailes shortly before James Norie painted the room an olive colour in 1739. Part of a grant for 4 portraits.
