James Byres and His Family

Franciszek Smuglewicz, c. 1775–1778

The sitter was the principal antiquarian cicerone, or guide, to the English visitors to Rome. He was a colourful and opinionated character. Here, he points to a map of Italy with his sister Isabella on left. The portly figure on right is his partner Christopher Norton. The elderly couple in the centre are his parents.
