Iznikware Pot

Unknown artist, c. 1570–1580

Though made in Iznik, Turkey, the silver gilt on this Rhodian pot was probably added in England. The vessel is painted with tulips and leaves in red and green on a blue ground. The lid consists of three masks - two lions and a female mask - in burnished cartouches between fruit on ribbon pendants. Ceramic-ware flourished in Iznik in the 16th and 17th centuries, much influenced by the blue-and-white porcelain of Ming-dynasty China and by Persian ceramics.
