This painting shows a view of the High Bridge over the Purfleet, King's Lynn, looking west towards the Great Ouse River, into which the Purfleet drains. Several inhabitants can be seen in the painting, looking out of their dwelling on either side of the filthy Purfleet, which was used both as an open sewer and a source of drinking and washing water.
