Horse frightened by a Lion

George Stubbs, 1788

© Hunterian Museum & Art Gallery, University of Glasgow

This composition of the white horse frightened by the lion is probably the single most famous image from Stubbs' romantic oeuvre. Whilst his race horses were certainly his most popular work, Stubbs himself found great personal satisfaction in this image, creating some 17 different versions.
