Homer reciting the 'Illiad' to the People of Delos

Unknown artist, c. 1863–1865

This work is a study for the central panel of the marble, which depicts Homer reciting the Iliad to the maidens of the temple of Delos. Its large size and bold execution would suggest that it was a presentation drawing, although several further significant changes were made to the marble before it was executed.
