This work depicts the homecoming of troops from the Indian 'Mutiny' of 1857-9. It depicts ordinary Londoners (no officers are included) and the impact of conflict on their lives. The Indian 'Mutiny' was a major event in the mid-Victorian period and this painting was created for a London or British audience who were shocked by the event, especially the massacre of women and children.
