Head of an Oriental

Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, 1635–1640

Castiglione is traditionally credited with the invention of the monotype medium. In this one the ink is brushed on to the plate so as to build up the design in the manner of a wash drawing. The head of the Oriental is shown in profile to the left.
